Question

Wire Tracer Info

I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket for a wire tracer. I've been looking at the ideal, amprobe and greenlee brands. My primary use will be residetial and light commercial. I've heard some negative comments about the greenlee, but then again, it costs the least. Does anyone have a good recomendation for one? My budget is $1000 or less. I found the amprobe AT-2005 for $905.Is that a good choice or are the others good as well?

Re: Wire Tracer Info

I think the AT-2005 is quickly becoming the new standard tracer as people retire the old standard, which used to be the 3M equipment.

That's a good price, in my opinion. Don't forget to check with your local supply house. Sometimes they can really surprise you. I got a better price locally on a Ridgid See Snake than I was able to find online.

Thanks for the info, I hope to pick one up by the end of the week. I know it will be good for heat exchangers but, I hope it will have many other uses.

I was in the shop tonight for a class and I asked about the tracers we have. The newest are Tempo, a 508s and a Tracker 2, the guys say the tracker is really good and it runs @200 less than the amprobe.

I just saw one at HD for $199.99. I didn't look to close, is it the same kit???

Looks like a useful tool if it works.

Re: Wire Tracer Info

OK, I made up my mind and ordered the AT-2005. Since I'm not broke yet, I've been thinking about adding a megger to my tool collection. Any reccomendations for a model for basic troubleshooting tasks? I haven't used them very much, so I don't know if digital or analog is more practical. I want to try to keep it under $300.

I have the Extech one noted, and another similar one that is a Supco M-500 (about 100 bucks). I also have a bigger higher voltage one that gets used maybe once a year, since it must weigh 40 pounds, bit it was a couple K, used. .

Thanks for the info, I will look into the Extech, I have a Supco now that needs to be upgraded. I like to have my own in my bag just incase I need to check out a motor or compressor that hasnt been run or hooked up in a while and you know "it was just fine before" according to the gc.
