Wire Gauge Question For Remodeling A Second Floor
I'm helping my partner remodel his second floor where we added 2 shed dormers and to help him cut costs i offered to help run the electric. My dad was an electrician and i've done quite a bit in the past but i'm not sure about some codes. The space already has 2 15 amp circuits and 1 20 amp circuit run from the box. I wired all the lighting with 14 wire and all the outlets with 12 gauge wire. i had planned on using the 20-amp to supply the bathroom gfi and jacuzzi gfi outlet and the two 15-amp circuits for the lights and outlets in the other parts of the area. Because the breaker is a 15-amp am i permitted to use 12 or 14 wire to supply power to the switch boxes of the lights or is it required to be 12 gauge. Also, if i was to put the lights and exhaust fan in the bathroom on the same circuit as the GFI would they be required to be wired with 12 since it is a 20-amp breaker.
thanks for the help |

Curious to know which code cycle you were under (since the new year just switched) when you pulled the permit? The answer will depend on when.

Re: Wire Gauge Question For Remodeling A Second Floor
actually, a homeowner can pull a permit to do the work theirselves which is whatr my partner did. i am helping him run the wiring and his electrician is going to come by and check everything out when the rough-in is complete. I was just trying to find out for myself.

Re: Wire Gauge Question For Remodeling A Second Floor
Here is how people do it in kentucky on a lot of residential jobs. Homeowners usually get someone unlicensed in kentucky or themselves..do the work ...and fill a not to sue county waiver form. The inspectors all know the homeowner probably didn't do it but can't prove anything. They still enforce the NEC though and are usually very tough if the HO says they did it. I live very near kentucky and know whats happening there. Your exempt anyhow since it's your home.
Don't take a jacuzzi bath and blow dry hair at same time! Might blow the 20!or just make them both dedicated and be done with it. |

![]() How is it legal to waive your rights with an illegal contractor doing the work? 2 wrongs make a right?

I didn't say it was legal. I just said that is what happens all the time there.
