Why Is A Wire Nut Called A Bug In Some Places?

It really bugs me to hear a wire nut called a bug. (No charge for the lame pun.)

What is the background for this term?

I've never heard of a wirenut being called a bug.

In the electrical trade, a "bug" is slang for split-bolt connector.

I've never heard this either. A bug is a bug. A wire nut is a wire nut.

This is what I found cause I was really getting bugged not knowing what the difference in terms between wire nut/bug, never heard of such a thing before.

Bug Nuts: Perfect for temporary and permanent terminations or grounds. Two grooved plates fit on opposite sides of the strand. Hot dipped galvanized finish provides extra corrosion resistance.

I make it a point to know the slang term for most everything in my trade, and I've never heard of anyone calling a wirenut a bug. A "bug" is a split bolt connector. If someone's calling a wirenut a bug, they're just confused. Having said that, if someone tells another to "bug" something together, they mean to connect by whatever means is at hand, and not necessarily with a split bolt. "Bug" as a noun is a split bolt. "Bug" as a verb means to connect two conductors together.

Not really connected but reminds me of the first time I heard a Madison hanger called a "battleship". I had no idea what my co-worker was talking about and he had never heard the name Madison hanger. I guess it's all local.

Would you like a soda. a pop, a tonic, or a coke?

Pepsi, please.

Have to be careful in Wisconsin.
I order whiskey and soda, and
they ruin the whiskey with this
sweet brown crap!

Soda.

I have also heard Madison bars dubbed battleships.

Did you know that Madison was from South Amboy, New Jersey?
