Water Heater Problem

I am trying to trouble shoot an electric water heater. I have checked the 2 elements for continunity and they are OK.

I also replaced the 2 thermostats. The problem now comes up that the upper thermostat keeps tripping and needs resetting to function.

I am confused as to if the elements are drawing too much current or if the temp is set too high. The client likes it HOT somewhere around 135-140

Re: Water Heater Problem

This is a thermostat issue.

If both thermostats are new, and you're sure they're both wired properly, that leaves little else.

Are you sure both the upper and lower thermostats are firmly clipped against the tank, and taking a good temp reading of the tank so that they'll shut off at the right time? Rust/corrosion under the new stats, on the tank, preventing accurate temperature sensing?

Re: Water Heater Problem

I did make sure they fit into the clips on the heater as needed and did not notice any corrosion on the heater itself.

Re: Water Heater Problem

Just 'cause you have continuity doesn't necessarily mean the element is ok.
A lot can happen in a little resistance tube getting 5 kw slammed into it.
Does it blow after it starts to heat? - could be the element... might have continuity to the shell when it gets hot ...
