Underground RepairI need to repair an underground feeder to a sub panel. It is 500 mcm wire in a 4" pvc conduit at 480 volts. I would like to put in a flush with grade splice box to repair the conduit. The wire is not broken, but is is skinned. The wire is type thhn so I don't think I can just use and underground splice kit without a box. The box that I am being advised to use is open bottom Quazite. It is in a lawn location with little or no traffic. Any advice or oppinions would be appreciated.

Re: Underground Repair
What's the operating voltage of these conductors? If it's just 240 or 480, and it was just skinned, I wouldn't hesitate to paint it with 3M's liquid electrical tape and cover with cambric. Repair the broken conduit in that area with the lineal split conduit repair sleeve.
You can splice 500MCM underground with a repair kit that has an H-Tap and a heat shrink sleeve. You need one kit per conductor. If you want to do a grade level splice, the Quazite box would be my 1st choice too. |
