Tip

Does anyone remember the tip where the the guy was changing a single gang mud ring to a 2 gang in a finished wall. He would screw the 2 gang face to face with the single and cut the drywall. If anyone knows where it is or somehow saved it could you please post that here. I would really like to see that again. I tried to search for it but could not find it.

Thanks

Re: Tip

I don't see how you could screw it but you can certainly hold it up, eyeball it and mark it with a pencil easy enough.

Re: Tip

it's been awhile but what we did was line up the slots on the two gang mud ring with the device holes in the single gang.the we traced around the outer edge of the two gang if wall paper we cut the paper first with a razor knife.then carefully cut the sheet rock with a jab saw. then wiggled out the old plate.

Re: Tip

I've never used a roto-zip, but it seems like you could drill the 6-32 holes out on a flat single gang mudring just a bit, screw it to the existing single gang mudring & zip around the flat one for a perfect cut to install the double gang mudring. Personally, I use a sharp knife & cut them out in a few minutes.

Personally...I'd hit that old single gang box with with a sawzall....grab a 2-gang box and cut it in....and be done with it.

Re: Tip

So use a rotozip and trace the outline of the 4S box....you'll need to hit the 8/32 screws to secure the ring anyway.

Re: Tip

A rocker would just stab a rotozip in, whip it around the box and sneak away leaving the damaged wires for the electrician to deal with........or so I've heard. LOL

That is precisely why I have my own rotozip ~ leave the rockers out of the equation.

Re: Tip

Duh....just screw long 6-32's thru a single gang ring into the existing ring and roto zip around it.

Seems easier and cleaner just to eyeballe it and use a saw/knife
