THHN In Cardboard Boxes

Say, any of you guys getting any of THHN in the newer cardboard box packages? Heaven help you if any of your boxes get rained on or wick up moisture from a concrete slab. Misery! Take a peek:

Re: THHN In Cardboard Boxes

I've pulled quite a bit of Cat. 5 cable that came in a cardboard box but that was in a dry location most of the time. You're right about getting a box full of THHN wet, what a pain that would be. It seems like it would be pretty useless when pulling wire outside for site lighting and the like. Same for pulling wire before the roof is leak proof in commercial buildings. Give me a Greenlee wire cart any day over carrying 5 different boxes of wire around for three phase 277V and 120V circuits.

never cardboard. but the best I've seen (only in a trade show, haven't found it on the shelves yet) is thhn in a plastic wrap that was designed to go into a 5 gal bucket. You could stack the different colors (b/r/b/w/g) in one bucket and be good to go. They pulled through the center. no need for emt throught the middle of plastic spools. no looking for makeshift jackstands. just carry your bucket and go.

I feel really bad, guys. This original post from me was totally bogus, and I expected to be called out on it by now. That is a picture of a recovered conductor that was coiled up in some extra boxes that were laying about. I really thought somebody would say, "Yaeh, right, who you fooling?" about 10 minutes after I posted it. Look closer, and you'll see they're just junk cardboard boxes, one jammed inside the other for a core. Sorry again. I didn't want to dupe anyone. I just thought we'd all get a laugh out of it.

Well, ...laugh!

I thought it was used fishing line, but I'm not an electrician and didn't want to sound dumb, oh well.

Ok, laughing

Better be careful, you might just give some marketing person an idea and then we all will be stuck with the new trend.

This would not be a new trend. For years conductors were packaged in square boxes with a dotted line circle cutout in the middle. The wire was usually tw inside the box. Getting water soaked was a problem sometimes for the cardboard, but the way they make the spools so cheap nowadays, I think it is high time they started repacking wire this way again. It sure made stacking much easier. It hardly takes any force to crack away the end on a thhn wire spool anymore cause they are becoming so thin. Then they get useless or you have to use a Reel-End on them.

500'. pull out really easily, no twists or kinks. much easier than toting spools, pipe for support, wire jacks, etc.

as for the cardboard, I put nothing past people these days.
