Swiss Fixtures

home owner brought their european lighting fixtures back to the states with them, all halogen. They liked the fixtures and want to incorporate into their remodel. Any thoughts on cutting the leads and patching in new transformers.

Re: Swiss Fixtures

My thoughts are this:
  • I am reasonably sure you have the technical ability to do this
  • I am sure you can make it work
  • I am reasonably sure you can make it safe
  • I am sure that the completed and modified fixture will have not been investigated by a nationally recognized testing labratory, such as the UL.
  • I am sure that 100% of the future liability will be on you
  • I am sure that that finished fixture rightfully should not pass inspection
  • I am reasonably sure that no inspector will ever notice
  • I am sure that I would not modify that fixture myself
There are lighting shops that specialize in chandelier repair and gas light retrofits that can legally convert this fixture and rightfully apply a UL label, taking you out of the loop.

Re: Swiss Fixtures

Like md said, it can be done but needs to be rewired. Europe runs on 220V/50Hz. All that this really means is that you have to rewire the fixtures and install new bulbs.

Re: Swiss Fixtures

bi pin bulbs look just like ones state side. fixtures are in fact old ship lighting. lenses put out a furnace full of heat. pulled em apart and checked the internal wireing. Turned out to be in good form. am recomending a low watt bulb and utilizing as accent lighting in wine cove, rarely used room.
Am wondering about the availability of door actuated or unobtrusive motion actuated lighting switches any leads.
thanks neil

Take our advice and have them rewired by a pro, you don't want a house burning on your resume.

Re: Swiss Fixtures

rewire plenty of craftsman and deco fixtures seems like home owners insist on placing multiple 100 watt bulbs in their flush mount antique fixtures. most old cloth wrap just cant take it over time. believe I'll take you advice on these ship lights.
thanks guys
