Re: Stocking Service Trucks

I dont work out of a van but my enclosed trailer is loaded with the assorted bins of plates, recepticles, switches in the colors of ivory, white and some brown and almond. I also carry assorted nail on boxes, old work boxes, assorted steel boxes, fan boxes, junction boxes and outdoor boxes. I also carry roughly 1k ft of PVC conduit in every size from 1/2"-2", i have several bins of LB's, reducers, male adapters, steel nuts, bushings, couplings for all those sizes. I carry at least one 250' roll of 14-2, 14-3, 12-2, 12-3, 10-2, 10-3, 14-2UF, 14-3UF, 12-2UF, 10-2UF and a 250' roll of #4 copper ground wire. I carry various assorted screws, nails, wire nuts, staples, lugs, connectors, various breakers, ground rods, wire mold, drills, drill bits, various saws, etc. Regardless of what and how much you carry you will never have everything you need.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

Trailer looks good.

There are two virtues of truck stock that will my everyone's life better.

1. Consistency - Carry the same parts and keep them in the same spot. A van stock system breaks down as soon as you deviate from the system. You have to know where the part is and that its going to be there everytime. This saves time looking and allows you to put more stuff in the truck without fear of it being to disorganized.

2. Stocking Frequency - Vans should be restocked often (every day). Otherwise, you will never have what you need even with the best system. If you do not restock your truck will start to have nothing you need and everything you don't need.

The number one problem we have is guys stock to much of parts they don't use often enough. A good example is a residential guy that carries 5 white GFI devices and 10 single pole 30A breakers. That makes no sense at all. He should have 15 GFI's and 3 breakers based on what he does.

Its best to check your stock usage often and see what parts "move" and what parts sit. The parts that "move" should get a little more space in the truck and the parts that sit should get less. Often this changes with the type of work and seasons.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

That's a good looking truck. Personally, I am on a quest still to make the perfect work truck. All that I figured out for now is I balance weight and volume v.s. profit. Ex. I don't carry much conduit and very heavy items due to precious space and wear and tear. I keep everything in clear containers, easy to get to. The easiest the most used etc... I'm constantly changing my bins over the years to more basic things. I think I have about 500-1000 items currently. Mini carry bin, Roll bin (Mini bin plus a little more), Bins on sides of trucks compartment with more stuff, and in the truck really oddball stuff. I'm trying to stock resi and commercial in a truck and it's not easy. Would love to see and read more comments on this. I would love to have a master design list with labels and such and be done with it for good. Restock Par levels once a week and be done with it.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

Ohmy, having 3 30 amp Single pole breakers on my service truck would be like 3 too many. I don't recall ever having to put a single pole 30 in for anything ever. I have a few in my shop, but those were screw ups from grabbing handfuls out of Home Depot boxes without paying attention....

Daily occurance! Never assume that the boxes in the electrical department at HD have the same things in them because the NEVER DO.

Always oddballs in those boxes. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

I'm always in a rush to get the frick out of there. They built the HD right in the middle of downtown Honolulu, there is a Costco next door with a gas station, and traffic is a nightmare in and out of there, so I try to hit early and hard... It is funny to see cars lined up 50 deep for a few pennies saved by buying gas at Costco. I bet those jerks drive all the way across the island to buy gas there.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

The electrical business is a parts intensive business. I have F-350 diesel with a 9' utility body and I have a well organized and complete inventory on the truck. I keep a notepad on the truck and every time I take a locknut or flex connector off the truck, I put it on the list and replace the items in a day or two.

I am not the author of this list, it's been kicking around various forums, I don't carry ballasts and wiremold, but this list gets you started.

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

I think the author of that list has dually trucks. It seems to me that a load like that would require the dual tires on each side of the rear axle would be the only way to keep that load from dragging your bumper on the pavement. The list has a single pole 30 amp breaker included as well, W.T.F???? Is this a furnace thing??

Re: Stocking Service Trucks

I have about 60% of that list in my trailer and i will tell yah thats alot of weight with tools. Another thing to consider is the damn cost of stocking like this, big $$$$ for that list for some items you may never sell. I gave up carrying any light bulbs and light fixtures, every time i went to sell them the damn things were broken from riding around. Waste of money really. I dont carry all that THHN either, i just carry 4 different colors of 12ga and 3 colors of 10ga. That will cover about any size circuit i will be working on around here. What you carry will vary by what you drive and where you are working really. I myself like to pull into a job and leave the trailer if i can until the job is done. The only problem towing this trailer is it can be tough getting into some driveways. Around here some of these damn driveways on the lakes are damn steep. A couple driveways i have had to put the truck in 4-low just to back in and pull out, usually everything in the trailer slide to the rear against the doors when they are this steep. These places can be tricky for vans too unless they are 4X4.

I agree. I think I've installed 2 or 3 over the years - simply not worth keeping one on the truck, and 3 is way overkill.

The ONLY time I've ever used a SP 30A breaker was for a 120v plasma cutter.
