Smoke Detector Chirping

hey guys,

i had my place upgraded to 200 amp service last year, at the same time the smoke detector was switched over to a hardwired unit. the issue is that the detector lets out a quick chirp once every 30 seconds. ive disconnected the thing and reconnected, tried resetting it, changed the backup battery in it and it still does it. what else could it be?

its driving me nuts!! any help would be awesome, btw im redoing alot of the old woodwork and ive encountered some detectors which go off when there is alot of dust in the air, coiuld it have something to do with this? mind you im doing most of my cutting outside

I have seen issues if the brands where slightly different models they did not play nice with each other.

The electrician swapped out the chirping one to a identical match and presto

Better yet, swap out the older units with new ones compatible with the chirper.

Re: Smoke Detector Chirping

If you have just one hard-wired smoke, then it's a defective unit. Buy another one tomorrow and sleep well.

If there's more than one, and they're interconnected, you may need to replace it with one that is compatible with the rest.

Dust in the unit will not cause it to chirp. It should, if anything, cause it to go into alarm as it sees the dust as smoke.

Also, make sure that the backup battery is exactly the type specified by the manufacturer. Shouldn't make a difference, but once in a blue moon it does.

Re: Smoke Detector Chirping

I agree with everyone here, these are fussy little buggers. I dropped one in my own home once on the carpet and about a week later then damn thing would intermittenly go off. And of course it would set all 18 of them off . It took me several weeks to find out which one was the problem, we didnt get alot of sleep until i found it.
