Re: Shocking Truth About GEC's

Good Article!

Couple things that I do when working anywhere around a grounding electrode or grounding electrode conductor. The first is ALWAYS wear your PPE. Also I will do a quick check with a clamp on ammeter to see what is going on at the GE or GEC(this is not real scientific but it does give a grain of salt of information).

I agree on the PPE and checking for voltage in that manner.

One of the reasons for the Sign that is required when Article 700, 701, and 702 are considered.

Re: Shocking Truth About GEC's

Specifically what PPE do you wear when dealing with a GEC?

Minimum PPE; safety glasses (I have to wear glasses anyway and they are safety glasses), insulated gloves with leather covers/cotton liners and rubber-insulated boots (not tennis shoes). This would be for service work. You need to do a Hazard Analysis of what you are doing and use appropriate PPE.

Re: Shocking Truth About GEC's

We had a thread about a year back where a person had a neighbor with an open service neutral, and the neigbor's neutral current was on their CABLE TV ground braid.

Use your head... use your PPE...

Picture depicts rubber insulating PPE on the left, and arc flash PPE on the right.

This was an outstanding article!

Can't wait to explain to a customer that her plumber kept getting shocked because of something that happened in someone else's house!

Electrons returning to their source is a lesson all electricians should take the time to understand but not all do.
