Scary
I performed an energy audit on a home in Jersey City. The wiring job on the place was a bit scary. I posted a few examples below. I am surprised how many homes I walk into that have problems such as this. I can't insulate this home until all these problems are taken care of. At least the knob and tube wiring has been disconnected (at least I think its disconnected).
Time to start looking for an electrician I can sub this stuff too.... |

Re: Scary
That's pretty typical of what you'll find in pretty much any old house.

Re: Scary
I would suggest to the homeowner that she have the JCFD on speed dial.
The company I work for is out of Bayonne and this is the type of work I love doing unless of course it's a bad neighborhood then no thanks. |

Re: ScaryQuote:
I have a friend who installs windows, doors and insulation in low income houses for the gov. He sees stuff like that all the time and like you said cannot insulate over it. It really pisses him off when he drives 2 hours to a job and it cant be done. The h.o. have to pay an electrician in order to get thier free insulation. Usually dont happen witch results in lost income for my buddy too. Last edited by dlcj; 07-17-2008 at 06:19 PM. |

Re: Scary
Like said above this is typical of older homes, it is sad when you see this kind of wiring in newer homes too. Good luck with it, proper repair wont be cheap and i myself would be sure it is inspected too.

Re: Scary
Looks like the guy that did this work is laughing all the way to the bank with all the money he's saving on locknuts, wire nuts and box covers.
I have seen plenty of this type of work, I'd would like to see the person(s) that is doing it, who are they, do they look funny, did they fall on their head as a child? A place I worked at in the city, they ran the electric wires (not romex, not bx, not in conduit of any kind) across the floor between sleepers then put a floor over them. And the neutral or hot was green, there was no GC. I just don't get it, to much work to put the fittings in the box with a locknut, why? It's as if the person went out of their way to do it poorly. Who in their right mind would do that and think it's okay? I know, it's not uncommon but I'm always outraged by it. I take it back (but since I already typed it, I'm leaving it), my old neighbor was a "handyman" (janitor at a bank) and did some fancy electric work. .

Re: Scary![]() If that's in a basement.... Those joists don't even need to be notched for a wire that size. |

Re: Scary
I had a GC do that one time to finish a basement. He thought it would save me some effort. He ended up having to get an engineer sealed detail print for the repair to the joists. If he'd have waited for me, it would have literally only taken 20 or 30 minutes to disconnect the cable at one end, drill some holes and run it though, then connect it back up. As it was, his job was delayed a couple weeks waiting on the engineer and inspections.

Re: Scary
I suspect whoever did the connector thing forget the lockrings in truck and didn't want to walk to the truck as well as take it all back apart and rewire. Lazy fools. It's keeps us busy though...thats the good side

Re: ScaryQuote:
, hopefully he learned a lesson and told two GC friends. It's funny how they always want to help, but if you ask them to haul the lumber or concrete around back, they all of a sudden have something else to do..
