Reverse For Split Phase Motor

I had a customer try to switch the leads around on a 240v franklin electric 1hp submersible pump in an effort to reverse it. He was hoping to dislodge anything that may have been caught in the impeller. I didn't think you could do that with a split phase motor, only 3 phase. I forget the technical name for the motor type. It only has a plastic start cap on the above ground controller box and a solid state switch. Is it possible to reverse a motor of this type by switching the load side leads?

Wouldn't that make your start winding into your run and your run into your start? That would mean the motor would not start right?

Reverse the two start winding leads, if you can figure out which two they are.

2 start winding leads? I only have one for this box. I think the "y" lead is common to both windings. I looked in my motors book and this is a "capacitor start, induction run motor" I think.

I just took some pics of an identical box to the one in the field.

You can't reverse that one, since the start and run windings are not in the control box separately.

We replaced the pump today. I was pretty sure that he couldn't reverse it. He was told he could from someone on the internet. It wouldn't matter if he did, as the pump has an auto reverse built in if it becomes blocked or seized.

One winding will have less resistance than the other. Off hand I do not remember which one will be your start winding. Good luck.
