Recessed Lighting For Shallow Ceiling?

I am building a new ceiling beneath and old ceiling that has sagged in the middle. Using 2 x 3' to frame it in. That leaves 3 inches of clearance, (after drywall), between the new ceiling and the low point of the old ceiling.

Is there any possibility for pot lights or any other recessed lighting in this scenario?

Ever think about using track lighting? http://www.lampsplus.com/htmls/track.asp

Re: Recessed Lighting For Shallow Ceiling?

I've used fluorescent lay-in fixtures with the frame kit for really tight situations like that. I think even most 3" diameter recessed cans are right around 5" tall. I know you can recess mount some styles of puck lights, but it would take a zillion of them.

Any chance you can bust holes in the old ceiling, above the furred down ceiling, to let regular cans stick up into that space?

Re: Recessed Lighting For Shallow Ceiling?

I could bust holes in the old ceiling, but it's rock lathe with 3/4" of some kind of cement/plaster combo. 1920's house, I was just trying to avoid that in the hopes they made a specialty product.

The HO uses this room for her hairdressing business, so she probably wants a light that is more complimentary than fluorescent.

How big of a hole would I have to make for you to be able to wire pot lights properly?

Just a few inches up( you already have 3 inches) and make the diameter a little larger for your wire to fit up the sides.

Re: Recessed Lighting For Shallow Ceiling?

Looks like you're going with track light. Many hairdressers want track light anyhow. Surround each station with a "U" of track, and they can place the heads as they see fit. They'll never be standing such that they cast a shadow on their work. Use some recessed fluorescents with the frame kit for fill-in and general lighting.

BTW.... plaster over gypsum lath isn't really that big of a deal to break the size hole you need, unless you have fire code concerns. A fist maul and a couple of minutes is all it will take.

The minimum height requirement for even the smallest recessed lights is 5 1/2", or 2 x 6 ceiling joists.

These are really low profile fixtures & they put out alot of light (Fluorescent though).

Re: Recessed Lighting For Shallow Ceiling?

That is ok if you are in a warm climate area year round. Cold areas = can not insulate, snow melts in that area above the fixtures = ice build up and then water paddles on the roof = leaks = problems.

Awfully expensive fixture when the alternative is to bust up recesses in the "old" ceiling. Used sealed cans and there will be NO problems.

Nora Lighting's shallow ceiling housings are ideal for locations with 6" joists and tighter ceiling clearances. Nora's shallow ceiling housings accept a wide variety of low profile trims.
