Quick Service Question

I have a quick question for the sparkys:

For a new house, 400A (nominal) underground service, outdoor meter main w/6 service disconnects.

Can a load center located in the basement be fed by conductors run under ground in a conduit? Can this conduit run beneath the garage floor?

The answer seems obvious, but I have never seen it done before. We are doing a preliminary layout on a new house so I haven't got a sparky lined up yet.

Thanks,
Verm

Yes, they sure can. No problem. Matter of fact, if the pipe is going to be below at least 4 inches of concrete, there's no minimum burial depth. The pipe can be just below the slab. Functionally, you'll want it deeper than that so that your sweep 90 up to the panel inside will be substantially underground and just have the vertical part sticking up.

Re: Quick Service Question

Not to put too fine a point on it, but with a disconnect feeding the panel being fed beneath the slab, I think the conductor is handled like any other branch circuit . I think four inches of concrete is required if the wiring is to be considered "outside" the structure such as might be the case if it was a service cable going to the first main breaker well inside the structure.

I'm not going to look it up, but I wouldn't hesitate to run conduit under the slab for a subfeed.
