Question For The REDI-KILOWATTERS

How does this work for the entire house if it is connected to just one breaker and the bus bar?... http://www.lightningrodparts.com/surge.html

Re: Question For The REDI-KILOWATTERS

That product is called a TVSS (Transient Voltage Surge Supressor) or "panel protector" for slang. To put it in simple terms, it's connected to the panel bus, and the ground wire. When it senses a surge event, it "opens a gate" and permits the surge voltage to flow as freely as possible to the earth. Will stuff in your house still get blown up? Potentially, yes, but this will give your gear a fighting chance. Everyone should have one. They are no substitute for point of use surge supression at your computers, entertainment gear, etc. The panel protector just lets more of the surge voltage go to the earth and less through your home's wiring. Without it, all the lightnig is blazing through the home's wiring, reaking havoc.

The one's from StediWatt are the finest, but the SyCom one you linked to is certainly quite respectable. Most of the panel manufacturers (Square D, Cutler Hammer, etc.) make one that plugs on just like a breaker, only it has no handle. Just indicator lights.

Re: Question For The REDI-KILOWATTERS

We have had about 5-10 lightning damage calls over last couple years. In almost all the cases the HO had most of the items previously mentioned. But, in almost all the cases but one the lightning bolt went through roof, hit branch conductor and backed up on it blowing everthing up in most cases (dishwasher, electronics, clocks even,) all those things are nice and everything if you have money to afford them all, but, in my opinion the best solution is unplug ( and put the plug far from rec.) all the top dollar valuables in all storms if possible.

good luck

Just the same thing, in a different place. You'd have to get permission from the power company to use one like that in the meter socket, and 9 chances out of 10, they won't let you.

My poco has the same thing that they will install for about $7.50 a month, but will not let you install one.
