Question About Builders?
Hello to everyone, been lurking here for some time. Just to let everyone know I started my company one year ago an have been doing service work, service changes, an the occasional remod. Would like to get in on some new construction to fill some gaps but need to know whats the best way to get on with a builder. Thinking of sending a letter out to some to see what happens. The question is what do you think the letter should say? Any more ideas is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Question About Builders?
I preface this with: This my opinion, not a fact.
The letter is probably not your best use of time. I'm a builder and am basing this purely on how I might hire new subs. I assume you are talking about small to medium sized builders and not a big corp. Most of the guys here just stop by the job sites and ask to speak to the gc. They introduce themselves, tell me what they do, and who they have done work for. I'm assuming N.C. is very similar in market type to TN. Just get out and meet some of the builders, leave them your card, but let them have a face to put with the card. If they mention that they know one of the builders you do work for have them call him to check about the type of work that you do. Other builders are the best referral system in new construction. Also give some of your cards to the guy you deal with at the elect. supply house. He deals with multiple builders every day, and can get your name around better than any direct advertising

Re: Question About Builders?
I agree with css....
We started our business a year ago and it was just me, my husband and my daughter. Today we are at 16 full time employees and the biggest residential electrician in the city. We did one "sample" house for a major builder, then another and another and then a commerical remodel and another......let's just say that working for that one contractor at first just opened so many doors. Today, when I approach contractors, I leave them with an introductory letter that includes a brief company history and list of references. I also state the fact that we're not the cheapest in town, nor are we the most expensive, we do quality code work and we'll be on your jobsite when we're expected and we don't leave until the job is done. Around here, dependable electricians who can pass an inspection are hard to come by. |
