Power From Meter Box

I'm working on a house that has no electric or meters in there sockets....but there is hot juice coming from the pole to the meters....

I used alagitor clips and an extension cord to connect to the hot side of the meter box and then plugged in my battery chargers and blew them up....

i want to be able to use my air compressor, so how do i connect the compressor to the direct hot line coming into the house...

any suggestion would be helpfull....joe

I really don't mean to be nasty, but as Nelson Muntz would say...HA HA!

You have NO place messing in a live meter pan. Good for you that all you blew up was a couple of chargers. Hopefully that is all it took to convince you not to mess around where you DO NOT belong. The consequences could have been MUCH worse!!!!!

What you did was hook them up to 240v instead of 120v, and I for one will not give you details how to do something HIGHLY illegal.

CALL AN ELECTRICIAN and get this hooked up legally and safely.

You get what you pay for.
You stole the power...I'd say you and the POCO are even ~ they might not though.

Stick to what you know.

You're lucky you are able to confess your crime tonight....as opposed to having your next of kin making funeral arrangements.

Call a qualified electrician before you kill yourself or someone else!

Wouldn't it be nice though if he got double the voltage from his batteries, and they never needed a recharge again because the power was free.

Sorry in advance for acting silly

Everybody should have one of those little gas powered generators. They've gotten cheap enough that they are just another power tool.

If only that were true

Some brands might have 32 AA batteries in them, but not all...because I took one apart at work today...no go...sorry. Just had 4 big cells inside, similar to the second video.

BTW...what he says at the end...is pretty much what I said. But really I didn't care...wasnt my battery

Get your cheap skate electrical contractor or general contractor to set up some damned temporary power at the site. Surely they must realize these aren't the dark ages and it takes power tools to get a job done.

And do not think that just because the power is on the side of a house that it's governed like a house. I'm not sure what the primary main switches are rated on a power line, but it's a whole hell lot more than any kind of power you've ever seen. Or perhaps a "life lesson" is what's needed in some people's cases.
So many times people feel an electric shock and say "that wasn't so bad", but have no clue what an electrical explosion can do. If it doesn't implode your chest from the compression or make you deaf, or give you cataracs 3 years down the road, it will definetly melt the skin from your hands and face at temperatures 5x hotter than the sun(35k farenheit).

DO NOT ever stick your hands or tools or clips or whatever inside a meter socket

Re: Power From Meter Box

Ask an electrician to jumper the socket. Around here they really do not care if you move the lines yourself and put in a temp service. (like when they tear down a house and rebuild a bigger one in its place) Some villages/munis want you to get an inspection, but once they know you, they don't mind if you do it and get it inspected when the new service is put on the new house. Then the poco comes and installs new, or move the old lines back over.

The power company does not care if an electrician jumpers the socket. They will even come out and jumper for you. I belive they do charge a flat rate when the meter is not installed though for the electricity you use.

Re: Power From Meter Box

Although a Ga. power lineman gave me a set of meter jumpers he made it VERY clear to only use them to test a house after trim out and don't let GA power catch me using them.Much easier than my other method of jumping the meter. The perfect tool for the perfect job.

Take a pair of car booster cables, hook one lead to each of the top meter connectors and the other ends to your nuts while standing in water.

Years ago I rented out a piggyback temp panels for a buck a day plus a charge for install & pickup. Don't think they're legal anymore.

Re: Power From Meter Box

Easy way is buy a 400w converter from HD/lowes for $30 plug it into your truck then plug in any brand battery charger or any other house hold iteam. Lot cheaper than $90 for a single brand car charger. Just don't charge more than one battery without letting the truck idel for 5 min. or you be sorry RRRRRRerrrrerree learned that the hard way lucky it was a stick
