Planer 3 Phase????

Just bought a 14 inch planer from an auction. It has an odd plug on the end.How can I tell if it is a three phase motor. There are only two wires going into the motor from the main switch.I can post pic if needed.

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

Post a clear pic of the plug, and perhaps one of the motor.

Does nothing on it have a dataplate (motor, or machine near where cord enters)?

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

Motor plate says 220v 3hp. Could this still be a three phase motor. Should be able to get some pics later if still needed.

thanks

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

I would say if the motor has only 2 wires its not 3phase..Unless one is missing somehow..is there a diagram under the coverplate for the motor? I used to see those plugs in DC environments...

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

The plug is a 3 phase one but it might have been used for single phase 240 volt with a ground and maybe a neutral. The neutral would be for the motor control circuit. Some times the plug on a piece of equipment is not a good indication of what the power requirements of the machine is, especially if it a used piece of equipment. You really need to check out the name plate on the motor and maybe even the control box. It would be well worth your money to have an electrician do an onsite inspection. I have done this a lot and sometimes there are surprises as to how the equipment was wired up by the previous user. You never know what the guy before you has done so be careful out there.

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

Unless your motor was used in some very rare ancient or foreign power scheme like a corner grounded delta it is in all probability a single phase motor.

Of course there is a possibility that it is a DC motor in which case it will have brushes and a commentator.

If you have any doubt rip it off and take it to your local rewind shop. There you may find some expert advise on a proper controller with modern overload and short circuit protection.

If that's the case then just ask the commentator. (commutator)

Re: Planer 3 Phase????

Ok thanks for all the input (even the potato humor) The pic of the motor plate would indicate that it is a single phase motor.
