OK, Which Of You Guys Did This?

This was on the craigslist in Phoenix this morning:

looking for "the electrician" who gave me bad info

You were the one who told me that you were a journeyman, remember I told you I was poping breakers in my electric panel???/ and you told me to turn off my main and to jam a pair of plyers in there for added load variations... well now I have noticed many black spots all over my home,so I climbed into the attic just to find the wireing burned up and burned thru the drywall, and a bad smell,,

I realize now journeyman means you dont work at any one place very long and travel is required.. as for me ....I think I will post my home on craigs list

Turn off the main, and jam a pair of pliers in there?

Even if a guy was given that advice, who in their right mind would follow it?

Im with you on this one. I know bridging both buses will cause you to shoot 240 through your whole house. If you had tvs or anything plugged in then Im almost sure they are fried also. Maybe if you had them on surge protectors Im not talking about power strips ppl get them confused often then you might be safe. hopefully your computer is not screwed along with your house. Sounds like you have a Big job ahead of you. Look at this way now you have a reason to Update your house to todays codes with AFCI in bedrooms and GFCI in kit and bath, Not to mention all your outlets have to be 12 wire now days. its going to be a Expensive fix. I don't think your insurance will cover pliers in your electric panel. ALWAYS CALL A PRO when it comes to Electric HVAC and Plumbing. theres a reason There are pros out there. Yea they will cost you more money then joe smo. but in the end you will come out with it done right the first time. If you use Joe Smo theres a good chance he don't have any insurance so if something goes wrong or your house burns down your stuck with a hole in the ground. DON'T FORGET TO PULL PERMITS. I hope things work out for you...

Bridging the buses will blow up the bridge.

The CL thing was obviouly a joke because the he didn't describe the damage correctly.

He wouldn't have "just noticed" the black marks outside his house. They would have been eveident when he re energized the panel, AND the branch circuit cables wouldn't be affected.

This is what would have happened.

Who did this?

This was probably my helper who figured that after 6 months of lugging tools and materials back and forth from the truck for me thought it was time to start doing some side work.

Turn off the main, and jam a pair of pliers in there?

WTF??

Do you know a better way to deal with the added load variations?

Sure do.

Do a load calculation and upgrade the service to the appropriate amperage rating.

At least that's what you'd get by hiring a professional.

I'm not even sure what that guy meant by "load variations". Doesn't really mean anything to me. Puts me in mind of Mike Tyson, when he tries to "talk smart" in an interview. "I'm going to punchamatize the spitosity right out of your mouthatude".
