Norwegian Exhaust 40 Hz 240 volts

had a request to see if I can make the above exhaust fan work above an island which is self venting. So far, it seems that if we can get 240v then the motor will just spin a little faster. Anyone have any experience with this?

No experience with something like this, sorry.

but wouldn't the motor move slower at 40 hz?

40 Hz? Where on earth is there a 40 Hz supply? Are you sure it isn't 50 Hz? And the fan will work, but it will run at 1.5 times the rated speed at 40 Hz.

My background is electronics, not electricity, so I'm light on motor theory. But why let that stop me?

The motor is wound to have a certain impedance at 40 Hz, so that would be higher at 60. It might want to spin faster, but would draw less current and consequently have less power/torque. My guess is that it would probably work as long as the original design had enough margin for the lower torque not to matter. Try it while carefully monitoring temperature.

[Edit] Ah. Just looked it up; Norway is indeed 50 Hz.

I've been involved in the operation of a circular saw, grinder, sewing machine for 15 years and they are all still operating. Also some funky hair remover, but I've never been allowed to see it operate.

Exhaust 40hz

I asked him to double check the nameplate. He did say it was 40 instead of 50. New to me as well.
