Motor Control Question

OK, I've decided to add a small, reversable 12vdc motor to the idle adjust on my 4 wheeler. Now I don't think it wouldn't be too difficult for me to wire up an up/down switch on the handle bar and just pull in the clutch or put it in neutral and hold down either button and watch the tach untill I get it where I want it, BUT... what I'd really like to do is have the motor go and stop at preset points, for instance every time I hit the button it would go up or down 500rpm... or a 1/4 turn of the adjuster. So if I wanted to go up 1000rpm I could just tap the up button twice. That would allow me to do it in gear and know where my idle is at. Any idea how to do something like that? Any type of motors, switches, controllers or anything like that you can recommend, please do.

Thanks

Re: Motor Control Question

Maybe a stepper motor with limit switches and DPDT momentary contact switch, could add a latching relay so you wouldn't have to hold the switch.

I haven't done model trains since I was a kid but surely nowadays there has to be a power pack with pre-set incremental speeds available.

Re: Motor Control Question

The way I read this the motor would be somehow geard to the idle arm.

When the button is pressed the motor would run in a given direction for a certain number of seconds. You could use One Shot timers. I would look to find electronic ones. You need something that would stand up to the riggors of the vehicle.

Re: Motor Control Question

Hey Liquid, I dunno if you finished your project yet, but I was thinking about what your tryin to do and wanted to let you know there is a semi-conducting integrated circuit (IC) called the 4017 decade counter. Its used in all kind of circuits (thats the nice thing about electronic components, there is a ton of different ways to do something) Anyway, The way it works is for every pulse to the IC it provides a stable output 0-9 for example: Push a momentary button one time and you will get an output that stays on until the next push of the button and it goes to the second output and so on up to I think 9 times total before going back to the first one. You can arrange your outputs with different time periods to adjust your idle where you want it. So you would know 1 push = so many RPM ~ 2 bumps = another amount and so on. Just thought I'd let ya know about it, they can only handle a load of around 200ma at the most, but using other components along with that might work out for ya.....

Re: Motor Control Question

I know about cruise control, my Uncle Ralph invented it! It was originally called a Speed-O-Stat and first installed on 1958 Chryslers. I have many copies of the original release from Perfect Circle Piston Rings.

Didn't even think of that, you can get plastic ones that slide on before the hand grip and will lock the throttle where ever you want it:
