Most Shocking

I don't know if you guys are interested in it or not, but History Channel On Demand is running a show called Most Shocking. I started watching it late last night. It featured a golfer who was struck by lightning and survived because the charge discharged through him AND through his golf club to ground sparing him his life. Another guy who gets helicoptered up to work on 500kv lines to do repairs and was nearly killed 20 years ago AND still works on half-a-million volts live. Pretty interesting stuff I thought.

Me too.

Who else thinks Discovery found the perfect niche with these shows? Someone is doing something right over there.
And thank goodness! Or else we'd be overrun with "Road Rules" and "America's Top Model".

I think mythbusters should do a show on construction myths, I am sure there are enough of them.

I saw a show on the helo-sparkies a while ago. I wonder what the pay scale is? I know what I'd have to get paid and it's a whole lot of $$$$$.

I saw one too. The mechanic got out on a special platform and was holding a big grounding rod in front of him. When he held it out in front of him, you could see the electrical discharge starting to arc from about 5 or 6 feet away, and the pilot hovered right up to the wire, the guy touched the grounding rod to the wire, reached over and took the grounding clamp to the wire, and climbed over onto the wire. He then touch the grounding probe to the helicopter skid and then un-clamped the grounding wire from the skid and as the helicopter backed away as soon as the grounding probe pulled away from the skid you can see the sparks jumping again. It was really cool.

I don't know what the lineman was making, but I bet the pilot was making even more. It takes big brass ones to hover your helicopter inches from 150,000 volt high line.

Those were 345.000 volt lines, They have 500,000 volt lines that if you get within 11 feet 4 inches of them on a tower you complete an arc and are toast.

Re: Most Shocking

I used to work on a farm where i ran a cotton picker under some high power lines and when we'd raise it up to dump it would be about 20' high and you had to climb up top and clean some screens that sometimes were wet. If i was withen 30' of the lines i could feel a buz! and on a quiet night you can hear the lines buzzing.
