Man bashes, burns electrical box on streetlamp, police say

I have NO idea what the cops are saying, but here is what was reported:

Quote:
A Jersey City man was arrested this morning after attacking a streetlamp electrical box with a baseball bat in an apparent attempt to break into it and then setting it on fire, officials said. Willie Hill, 34, of Garfield Avenue, was arrested at the corner of Fulton and Ocean avenues at just after midnight and charged with arson, reports said, and firefighters put out the fire.

A witness told police Hill was hitting the box with the bat at Woodlawn and Garfield avenues and then torched it, reports said, adding that the witness said Hill had attacked the same electrical box with a bat about six months earlier.
The area of the fire smelled of an accelerant, possibily gasoline, reports said.
The witness said Hill had been carrying a blue laundry bottle and a similar bottle was found in a nearby garbage can, reports said, adding that a sample of the liquid in the bottle is being sent for testing.
....makes a little more sense when you read the full article

I drive down this street almost everyday. Not exactly the nicest area of the city. I would assume that this moron was trying to steal the copper from the streetlight, if I had to guess.

By the way Celtic, I appreciate all the NJ electrical-related news stories. I tell the kids to lock the van doors each and every time they go in and out of the truck. I actually had three stops today in Jersey City but none by this neighborhood, thank God!

Some chinese buffet down by the tunnel. I like it there because there's a big parking lot. I really hate having to find a parking space 3, 4 times a day. We got a big 4-family renovation job I started today on 2nd street and I sincerely hope I'm not the primary electrician on this one.

"....just after midnight..."

Maybe the streetlight was shining right in his bedroom window, and it ticked him off? I know that really gets under the skin of some people who live in downtown apartments.
