Seriously?

What wattage are the cans rated for?

5 x the number of stairs between landings from the first floor to second, if no stairs, no limit.

I was wondering if it was a trick question.

Re: Low Voltage Cans

Not so many resi 20 amp lighting circuits, in my observation anyhow. Mostly commercial work, where you'd run 20 amp lighting circuits.

To the OP, wattage is important. If you had 1 watt cans, you could run a couple thousand on a 20 amp circuit. If you had 50 watt cans, maybe only 40 or so.

Re: Low Voltage Cans

That's about right, 40, I have 8 stairs between landings, so 8 x 5 = 40.

Yes, Mike. I believe that alternate claculation method is outlined in Annex H of the NEC.

Re: Low Voltage Cans

Wait if they're low voltage, assuming 12 volts, you can have 10,000,000 12 volt lights on a 120 volt circuit, or somewhere around there. Amps, that's a different story, you give 20 as an output but what's the input(current -or- wattage with voltage of the lamps)?

I never understood the desire for a low voltage fixture? Do people think that because they can stick their finger in the socket with no shock then they're really getting something high end?

For energy efficiency think higher voltages. It still takes the same amount of power to move the same pile of crap, but your line losses are lower. Meaning your not losing as much power simply trying to get the power to the load.
