Knob And Tube
I am remodeling a bathroom which had knob and tube running through the floor. I have an electrical background, so I traced it out and was able to remove it from the bath without disrupting the rest of what it was feeding.
My question is - Is there a code approved means of capping or terminating the knob and tube within the ceiling or wall without a box or access panel? I looked in the IRC code book but didn't see an answer. I am able to install the access but it would be in a closet floor and would rather not if there is an approved and safe way. Thanks so much for your feedback. Dan Shingler Shingler Home Improvements |

Re: Knob And Tube
The code is mute on this topic.
Splices are required to be in junction boxes, and junction boxes are required to be accessible. You're not splicing. You're just "ending". This is generally done by cutting the conductors a few inches past a knob support and screwing a wire nut on the end. It is sometimes helpful to skin the conductor a bit before applying the wire nut, as the wire nuts don't always tighten very well on over old conductor insulation. Give it a little copper to bite into. |

Re: Knob And Tube
I loop it around the knob 1 1/2 turns then wrap it around itself tightly for about 4 turns, cut it and wrap the cut end tight with electrical tape. It looks a little like a fishing knot when you are finished. this method does not let the conductor slip out of the knob over time.
