Installing A Ceiling Fan With Light

Im installing a ceiling fan and the wires to hook up are a ground, white, black, and a black wire with a skinny white line on it. The instuctions only talk about hooking the ground to the ground the white to white and the black to black. What about the black and white wire? An what is its function? Also the wiring is old and doesn't have a ground, do I need to wire new or go withot the ground? Thanks for the help.

The ceiling fan you're trying to hang, what's the weight limit on the box say?

You need to post this question about black and white wires on a different website.

May I suggest: http://www.diychatroom.com/index.php

Re: Installing A Ceiling Fan With Light

Just pulled down the ceiling fan in my buddies living room (damned Cathedral Ceilings anyway!) and sadly, I must report that I can not help you. His had a black wire, a white wire, a green wire and a black wire with a grey stripe. So I don't know how to deal with the skinny white line.

The odd color wire, whether it be blue, red, or something with a stripe, is for the light portion of the fan/light.

Scenarios like this is the reason you call an electrician today instead of the fire department tomorrow.

Re: Installing A Ceiling Fan With Light

yes you can tie that in with the black wire.just like what was said in the previous post that wire is for a light kit.its always good to hook that wire up so if you decide leter on you want to add a light kit you dont have to go back into the ceiling box to make the connection. just make sure its capped off in the in the bottom of the fan if ur not using it, sometimes its stripped and if u dont check it u will find out by the nice spark coming out of it.also if u have a 3 wire going to ur ceiling box u can hook it up to the 3rd wire and get a fan control switch which will let u control the fan or light seperately, which is a real nice feature.hope this helps.

Re: Installing A Ceiling Fan With Light

sorry forgot to mention the other part of ur question. everything should always be grounded its for safety.if u dont have a ground and cant get one to the box it will still be ok to use but just not as safe. check the connector on the box, sometimes they wrap the ground around the screw and its tough to c with all the wires in there if so u can attach to that. good luck
