I think macmikeman's prices are a bit over the top, but we don't know where he is located. This makes a big difference.

Also, changing a whole fixture is WAY more labor that simply changing a ballast. If course replacing a fixture would be a better way to go, but sometimes that is just not feasible.

I'll tell you what, if I could live and work in the Adirondacks I would.
If you read my other post I stated that $35 is a fair price-I am refering to the $75 a ballast for labor- man, I would love to just do that, any day of the week. I do realize it makes a difference where one is located doing the work, but it still seems very high.

Re: How Much You Charge? HAHAHAHA

Well, as said location plays a role in how we charge. I am assuming that he is charging some travel time there too, i know i would if i had to fight through some of that city traffic. Hell, i get road rage around here sometimes and i know we have it good as far as road traffic. The only probelm we have is we have to drive between 2-50 miles just to get that hours work yah know. I know guys around here who charge alot to do some very small jobs and get away with it, i personally wouldnt do that but then he has that job and i dont so maybe i am doing something wrong. I can even give you an example, just last night i argued with a friend who asked me what he should charge to dig a 40' ditch 2' in the ground and install 40' of sch-40 drainage pipe. The HO is hooking the pipe up so all he is doing is the digging, picking up the pipe and covering it back up. I stated i would either charge hourly for the mini-ex from time left home to when i came home or charge $3 per ft for the ditch. He laughed and told me i was crazy, he is charging this guy $500 to dig a 40' ditch and the HO has no problem with it. I figure that it will take him longer to unload his machine than it will to dig the ditch, all the work total will be less than an hour. Even with drive time both ways he is less than 2hours working. Some folks need to charge more and some do it just to get as much as possible.

IMHO...and as I am only a few hours [that means 20+/- miles in NJ] away from Mags....I think his price is.....

LOW!

Yes, I do.

All told, that job took more than 1 hour from phone call to "Thank you - have a nice day, call us again".

Anyone care to timeline the actual job?

Changing the fixture is not always a option. At times they will have two of the same fixture which are not easily replaceable.

How would you go about earning your overhead amount over the course of 243 working days in a year if not for 5 billable hours per day at $75 per hour? That ballast did grow in my yard, I had to go buy it, and use gas to buy, and I had to buy a truck to drive to the supply house and then to the job site. The ladder, bought that too, along with a 3/8 nutdriver, a 18 volt cordless drill, and the wirenuts. I'm lucky I didn't have to take the time to get a permit for this job because that would have driven up the price to well over $200. Celtic is right, I don't charge enough.

Re: How Much You Charge? HAHAHAHA

I tell my bigger customers and the crew to think of me like an iceberg. Me showing up and working is the tip. Here is what's below. Going to supply house's like an idiot looking for material, driving, phone calls with customers, utility company, inspectors, paperwork, more paperwork, load calc's, permits, looking up electrical stuff on internet, going to jeanie to get someone $50 for cigarettes cause they are broke til payday, time lost to customers who talk alot, taking customers to lunch/golf, free phone advice to relatives and friends about electrical, organizing parts/material/garage, sharpening drill bits, charging batteries, returns lowes, hd, etc..., bids, takeoffs, time on this stinking site, time reading NEC and Ugly's and ongoing study. After all that is done then I can show up and work a little. I wish I could just show up and work in peace like the old days.

Here is an upcoming job I have to do.

Basement is finished but there is room behind the wall to run wires. Front of the house is brick and we want to install 1 GFCI receptacle on each side of the front walkway for Christmas lights in the beautifully landscaped front yard.

This'll be a dedicated 20 amp circuit, panel is 10' feet away from 1 of the receptacles, and 30' away from the other. The outlets will be controlled by an exterior photocell and a SPST 24-hour timer beside the panel. Total travel time is 80 minutes. Murray panel.

tree-fiddy

figure on an 8 hour day for this one...travel time, permits, dealing with the brick, etc...the day will be spent.

IMHO....outside.
No one wants to have to go somewhere else to reset a GFI.

BTW....highlight my tree-fiddy post.

At this point I'm thinking about just using a device in each box. This way if the device trips only half the lights will be out. Box fill is also a consideration as nobody likes overstuffed boxes, especially ones with water damage that will happen eventually.
