I'm telling you this house is wired. I don't do electrical that much, I specialize in plumbing.

I tested a hot wire with this wire and it produces 120 volts. However, if I'm correct, that just means that the wire could be neutral or ground.

Can you help me? How can I find out if the wire his neutral or ground?

We tried that. A professional will not touch this wiring because it's not code compliant. They want to rewire the whole house at some $5,000.

All I want to know if how to figure out if this wire is ground or neutral?

You CANNOT install a receptacle to the wires you describe. Just because someone is willing to pay you to do something, doesn't make it the right thing to do.

This entire Thread is a ruse!

No way could a "20 Year Electrical Tinker" be that dumb. Nor would one stick around this long after so much abuse!

A professional is staying away from this job. They only want to rewire the whole duplex. The wiring has been fine for the last 15 years, so I'm not worried that anything will go wrong. I just want to find out if the wire is neutral or ground?

I agree... Lock this down... It's not a funny joke.

People DIE from hacks hooking sh** up to any old wire.

If the wire is a neutral, it will be easy to install a outlet here. If the wire is ground then you are right, I cannot install a outlet here.

That the reason I am trying to figure out if this wire is ground or neutral. HOw do I figure it out.

In this area all rental property has to be inspected prior to new tennants.
It's done for a reason.
Code compliance.
Not to mention protection of life and limb.
I'm sure their Ins.Co would not cover their property if the worst should happen.
Getting the drift yet?

I know they go to the same place. However the ground and neutral are still different. So do you think it's a ground or neutral? Or it doesn't matter.

Believe it or not, the insurance company just inspected the circuit breakers. However, the inspector didn't take the panal off the circuit breaker, therefore he couldn't tell it was not code compliant. Instead, the inspector was just making sure the house was circuit breaker and not fuses.

It only matters in compliant or semi compliant installations. Sounds like you just need to hook it up.

Re: How To Know If Unknown Wire Is "neutral Or Ground"?

This is what they told you there but you were misdirected as you are not a professional.

This site is for DIY - Homeowners
It is not for installing non-code compliant wiring
Nor is it for people who do this as a living
Please visit the Contractors site

And judging by the responses, should know no one will answer this ?

I hope your plumbing is better than your electrical work.
