How To Install A New Sump Pump

I didn't know where to post this so I figured I'd post it here and hope for the best. I did a search in the plumbing section first but didn't find what I was looking for. I hope you can help.

Anyway, as u know the northeast was hit real hard with a rain storm... blah, blah, blah....

To make a long story short, I want to install a new sump pump at my uncles house. Making a new sump pump location doesn't seem like rocket science, but I haven't done it before, and need your help.

How wide the hole need to be?

How deep does the hole need to be?

Do I need special PVC pipe to pump the water out of the hole?

What kind of liner needs to be installed in 'the pit'?

I must sound like a real DIY'er. You're right, I am when it comes to plumbing!

All these are DIY questions, this forum is not for these questions, now if you post over on DIY Chatroom, I'd be happy to answer these questions.

Code says 24" wide diameter or 20" sq. A depth of at least 24" below floor surface so about 28" and discharge to daylight by pipe or approved sewer system. I know I ve heard people injecting the water into the sewer before but I dont know the exact rules, Im not a plumber either.

Re: How To Install A New Sump Pump

try posting in the constuction forum-you will likely run across guys who build from the ground up including inserting pits before the concrete pour.

As a side note, I've seen big box stores sell 'kits' to drop into the floor. It's just a pvc 'pit'-then you can do whatever with them (run pipes into the pit or not). My guess is after digging the hole, insert the pit, layer plenty of pea gravel around the pvc pit and fill the top back in with a layer of finished concrete (not to cover the pit though). Put consideration into which corner is the lowest or wetest-with that said, may the problem has a little to do w/ pour drainage, which can be fixed-a high water table on the other hand can't be.

Be advised that retro-fitting a sump pit can be an open window to radon.

Re: How To Install A New Sump Pump

For one client we installed (it was outdoors on a low spot on a patio) a pump, we dug a hole about 36" deep, put in a sump pump bucket (got it at grainger) that was 24" in diamiter. Then put in a sump pump - we used a little giant 1/3hp and hooked the pump up to a drain line that drains to daylight. The pump we installed only had to pump the water uphill about 2', but the pump is capable of around 10' - and there are other pumps that can pump uphill further.

We drilled holes in the sump pump bucket to allow water to seep in, lined the outside of the bucket with filter fabric to keep the dirt out, and then backfilled around the pump bucket with clean gravel for easier water flow into the bucket.

Hope this helps.

Re: How To Install A New Sump Pump

Digging a hole, dropping in a tub with holes and plugging in a pump is just an amateur band aid patch for a real problem.

Start at the beginning and decide where the comes from and why you have water. Then decide if you need drains or can survive and just plan to have an unfinished basement that is occasionally a swimming pool.

Talk to someone with some experience and jobs he can point to.

Re: How To Install A New Sump Pump

Hey, thanks alot for all the help fellas. I'm gonna talk to uncle Lance and see if he still wants to do it. We may be doing a "band-aid patch" type install, but I do plan on repairing the wall where the water was coming in as well. The crack in the wall is along where the Bilco doors are. I appreciate all the tips!

Thank you!

Re: How To Install A New Sump Pump

ConcreteMasonry - I disagree that that is a band aid fix. That is the definition of a sump pump. i.e., dig a hole, put in a tub with holes in it, and put in a pump. That is what a sump pump is and what it does. For the correct application, this is not a band aid fix.
