How To Certified Electrician
My mom is a volunteer for Masonic Homes program to teach dyslexic kids. One of her students is pursuing a career as an electrician.
He is currently working for a local company that does electrical assembly work in hopes of being sponsored for formal training to begin his apprenticeship. He is becomeing very frustrated as he has been passed over several times for the training program. My mom was asking me about how one goes about getting their apprentice/jouneyman/master electrician designations. At that point I realized how ignorant I am of the process. Any advice I can relay would be appreciated. Keep in mind this guy can read and take tests, but it will be much more of a struggle than for your average person, so the path that includes the most hands on and the least book learning would probably suit him better. Also, is there a "best" relevant resource book my mom can use as their reading material in their classes so he can kill 2 birds with one stone? Edit: He will be working/schooling in PA

Re: How To Certified Electrician
There is no such thing as apprentice/journeyman/master classifications in PA. Indeed, PA does not even license electricians. He can call himself an electrician tomorrow, if he wants to. Electricians are licensed on the local level, and licensing involves nothing more than passing a test, having insurance, and paying a fee to whatever particular municipality is requiring the license.
There are two main apprenticeship programs in PA. One through the IBEW (union) and one through the IEC (non-union). Other than that, the other more typical route is getting hired as a helper and getting it all through OJT. |

Re: How To Certified Electrician
I don't think you need licensing in PA, but either way you'll need plenty of experience before you go out and start charging electrical work
