How To Build An Automatic Start Switch?

Hello all,

I am a contractor with a pretty severe dust allergy. During the rough phases it doesn't bother me much, being in the open air. However, when I am on the finish phase and running saws indoors it can be horrible. So, for this house I am looking into building an effective dust control system. Two problems I have identified have been the noise and the likely hood that portable units won't last long if run all day.

The typical solution seems to be to run a vacuum with automatic start such as this one:

http://www.feinus.com/p/NEWdustfree/92025.htm

when you turn a saw or sander on that is plugged into the vacuum it senses the draw of the saw and automatically turns the vacuum on. The problem I see is that the cfm of these units will not be enough to run more than one or two saws at a time and only if they have small ports.

I would like to run a dust collection system like this:

http://www.mytoolstore.com/delta/50-820.html

and rig up a system to automatically start the unit when I use one of several saws connected to it.

What say you God's of Electrical?

this is probably the easiest thing to use. if you are adament on having a dust collector, why don't you rig a switched receptacle that you plug the saw and the vaccum cleaner into that you have to turn on to make the saw work. keep the vaccum turned on and that way you don't have anyone making that one quick cut that stirs up just enough dust to aggrivate your sniffer.

You can use anything you want with this:

Although a pricey option, the Kapex chop saw by Festool has one of the highest rated dust collection for a chop saw. But that doesn't do anything for the other saws and equipment. Sounds like the respirator is you best ortion considering the price.

Sears makes one, Craftsman Auto Switch, Link.

There's a ton of ways to do it, from low voltage to line voltage, with relays or even using the device above to control it with relays, there are a lot of factors, number of of devices used with dust collection and number of areas etc.

Here you go, I saw it following Leo G's link.

Link

They have a 110 or 220 unit, for that matter you could buy one of those cheap ones for the home and use it to control a relay or motor contactor.

That remote is fantastic. I have it for my sprayroom fan, connected to a contactor to operate my 3PH 3HP 36" fan. It says it is good for 50'. I have tested it at over 200' and it works every time. Through a metal building at that. Well worth the money. I bought it 3 years ago and I haven't changed the battery in the FOB yet.

Woodcraft has plug in outlets that you plug the power tool into one and a vac into the other, auto on, runs for 7 seconds after tool is off. 30 bucks a pop. I have a couple I could sell you, they are kind of worthless now that I jumped head first into Festool and their dust extractors. You can hook multiple tools to one extractor, you just need to get creative with Y's and blast gates.

Warner,

How does it work running a 15amp mitersaw into the festool vac for automatic start. I was under the impression that the vac and the saw had to split the 15amps available. Or can you plug into a 20amp outlet and get 20amps to split?
