The Future For EC's In Illinois

Back at the same house where the back-stabbing problem was and sneaked a couple of pics (wanted to take more but there were others around). As I mentioned before, the GC has the electrical license and has laborers (Spanish speaking, I'm guessing from Mexico) doing the work and aside from the back-stabbing issue (illegal here) it looked pretty good, it's all in emt, I was in the basement and noticed upon closer review that all the conduit bends are made and " cut in", and I thought it was funny.

Yeah, that is a pretty wasteful way to run pipe. Bend your piece how you need the bend, then cut both tails off to fit. I'll admit that I've done real tough pieces that way from time to time (just too lazy to do the math and make the marks), but those are pretty simple bends in your pics. Bozo hour.

What sort of conduit hanger is that in the top pic? Is that some sort of weird drive strap? Looks more like a big wire staple.

Do you think so? Looks a little weirder to me. Maybe not.

We had a guy that was bending 3/4" EMT on a cyclone bender making prefabbed 90s. Oh we were extremely slow that day mmm and a few days after that. That guys is no longer employed there.

You can buy them already made so why bother buying a bender and hiring someone to do it.

That's what they are, or very similar (maybe the Chinese version), the stuff they are using appears to be NOS (New Old Stock), the receptacles were in boxes that I don't think I've seen in years.

You can see one to the very left of the bottom picture too. Kind of looks like a drive strap.

Re: The Future For EC's In Illinois

Was this house in Lombard? If so our inspector friend will at this one. He came to inspect one day and told us about the inspection he had before. 11 bends in one run of EMT should sum up the quality and profesionalism of that job. Yes, he told us there were actully 11 bends. Where do they find these people?

It's unincorporated Lombard, but I think it's being inspected by Lombard, under Lombard code, not sure though (I haven't been there when the Inspector was present), but they were tagged for back-stabbing but I noticed they were back-stabbing 12ga., so it may be county.

I've seen a few jobs recently where the electric work was being done by laborers, it's a sad state of affairs.

True, true. Dupage county tends to be less picky then the munis. They will get a way with a lot more if is being inspected by the county.

So, are they using 12 solid? Old school, or romex? Solid 12 is a pain.

The only pulled receptacle I saw was for the sump pump in the basement and it was 12 solid in emt, the whole house is emt, no romex at all as far as I could see (if they could, I'm sure they'd use romex), although all the receptacles I saw in the house were the old standard style not Decora style and the packaging from them that was laying around looked years old, maybe he's getting his supplies at the flea market?
