Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

So I have a customer who wants an outlet under an end table in there living room for a lamp. No problem. But im curious of which brand / style boxs you guys have had good luck with in a remodel situation. Its finished tile. which makes it alittle harder.
i was a typical floor outlet with the brass coverplate , but somehting that will be able to be cut in....

any tips on the tile part? i just got the new rotozip with the cutting wheel adapter and diamond blade, plus the routor bit style, tile bit, havent tried it on anything tho. ( always thought the rotozip was kind of home owner-ish IMOP. ) but this one its pretty nice and it has to many attatchments and features to turn down. Any one use one with the tile bit? well see... thanks fellas

Re: Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

Here's my set-up...use it for many different applictions:

Rotozip (I recommend a CORDED model...I've burnt out too many cordless models)

Circle Cutter ~ Rotozip #CRCT1

Vacuum attachment ~ Roto-zip #RZVAC1

Vacuum ~ Dewalt DC-500 Corded/cordless

SWEET

No mess...no clean-up...done

.....BEFORE you go postal on the tile....how is access BELOW the area?

What kind of tile is it? You may have to look into purchasing a Diamond Hole saw runs around $ 25.00 for a 2"

I use the Carlon kit that Celtic posted, but I generally use the kit with the brass cover. The plastic one gets real cruddy looking after a while.

Where is the requirement that cover be "close-able" ?

I agree that plastic cover is crap...brass is where it's at!

awesome, im liking the single outlet, round, drop in box. Just hole saw and drop in? i wonder how it fastens to the surface, ill look at it in more detail.

the one in the photo above id have to worry about the bracket for the adjustablity, becuase its finisned tile no carpet, im sure im looking at the wrong one tho. thanks guys.

Re: Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

I've never really been able to Roto-Zip floor tile. Even with the tile bit, the floor tiles are just fired so hard, they turn the bit into a little blue nub in about 1/2". I use a 1/2" glass bit in each of the four corners, and cut out the long lines with a diamond wheen on a 4-1/2" grinder. Be prepared for this job to take twice as long as you thought it would, particularly if you get into some hard floor tile. Might want to post a Q in the tile forum area for tips from the tile pro's.

Re: Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

Do guys really actually use rotozips on tile or is this some sort of conspiracy amongst rotozip owners to convince each other that they actually use them?

I'm with MD, that's what the grinder is for, but I'm not drilling holes first, isn't that why God made cover plates didn't he?

Forry, I hope you mean 1/2 hour for the whole job and not 1/2 to cut the tile. I don't have enough cordless batteries to run my grinder for 1/2 hour straight.

Yeah, but the cover plates for these floor boxes are special, and unforgiving. They're only a smidge bigger than the box itself. Not really much room for error or overcutting. Best to spend a little extra time and effort to make it accurate.

Re: Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

Lew electric makes a drop in floor box that we use quite a bit with wood floors. It's a round box, # 812-DFB. You would have to cut the tile hole slightly larger than the hole the body of the box drops through. Then the flange would rest on the subfloor and the top of the box would be level with the tile hopefully. The flange is about 1/4" thick. They make a variety of covers.
The picture of the one shown is nice because the height is adjustable.

Re: Floor Outlets, Cut In Tile Project.

I have used the roto zip for cutting tile and it has worked great. They make two tile cutting bits, one for wall tile and one for floor tile. The wall tile bit is about 10 bucks and says right on it not for floor tiles. The floor tile bit is around 40 bucks and larger in size. I have also used an angle grinder with diamond blade and it works good to.
