First Week In The Job!
And I love it!. Although I am doing a lot of the "crap" work. PIcking up trash and cleaning up ladders and equipment after the experienced electricians do their job. I don't mind at all. I am working for the knowledge not the money like one person said
Also, I noticed a lot of people have negative attitudes towards the job and/or company. Then I ask how long have you been here and some would say since '88. Do you have your jouney man? No. So you can see where that is going.. I got to set up lights and bring it down from the whip and hook it up. I hooked up a master, a slave and an "A" light. I loved it. I am trying to do quality work with the wiring. |

Re: First Week In The Job!
Listen and pay attention - mostly to your watch....not being a clockwatcher, but if it is your job to get coffee:
- First thing UNLOCK ladders/boxes, then get the orders and money...wandering about to find the guys is $ lost - Get it back on time and HOT(or cold, whichever it needs to be) End of the day...every day...same time - like clockwork - ladders get chained, tools - boxed and locked, etc Be helpful, but don't be up people's azz's asking questions and don't be a brown noser. If you don't know..ask...don't BS your way through it. Most importantly...."know your role"...you are lower than whale turd - just accept it ...things will go a lot smoother if you have a toughskin and don't get all bent out of shape when someone tells you get a henwiegh or skyhook....it's all in good fun, no one gets hurt (maybe your feelings - grow a tougher skin)...jobs go better with some laughter and jokes....just accept it.You'll do the same to some other kid in 10 years (and that's your name in spite of what your DL says)

So, do you want to fill in the end of the punchline?
Celtic. Whats a Henweigh? Drum roll please, while he eagerly awaits the answer. Besides the skyhook, do you have any other apprentice trade go-fors? Do you guys still use the wire stretcher? Ed |

Re: First Week In The Job!
Once you get used to certain projects you'll get accustomed to the tools and materials needed for each chore. try to stay a step ahead of the electrician and have what he needs ready before he needs it. Keep with that approach and pretty soon you'll find a good mentor who'll teach you and pull you out of low man role.....good luck, welcome aboard!

I ASSUME that was a joke but if not, I'd have to disagree. People move up at their own pace. Some people FLY by the others just by asking questions and taking the extra steps. Your "role" is to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can. Time is money and your "role" is to earn more money. One apprentice will stand there and wait to be told what to do. Another will learn to anticipate the next step and have things ready. Which one will advance faster/further? I have trained and TRIED to train a LOT of help and have learned to spot the good ones right away. Example. I am setting up to do some cutting/drilling and I need power. I ask an apprentice to get an extension cord. The bonehead guy brings me the cord, still rolled up. The better guy at least plugs it in. The really keeper plugs it in, brings a 3 way splitter, makes sure it's hot and plugs in the battery packs to make sure they will be charged when we need them all the while looking and listening to understand the task at hand. |

At this point, the OP is lower than whale turd....maybe next week/month he will be higher....today he is lower than a whale turd. Some people are beneath whale turd longer than others - some people never elevate past whale turd - some people turd on the whale. You may want to sugar-coat with fancy slogans: People move up at their own pace. ...but it means the same thing ~ know your role: - beneath turd - turd - above turd

Re: First Week In The Job!
Reminds me of a time I wanted a cordless Sawzall. I screwed up and asked for a "Sawless Cordsall" instead, without fully realizing what I said. The guy thought for a couple seconds, and brought me an extension cord. Yes, indeed. An extension cord is a sawless cordsall.

Re: First Week In The Job!
Well kid it could be ALOT worse. My first year plumbing, my name was mother fu*ker. I was called nothing else but that name. It did suck but I had to pay my dues, just as everyone else here. And you will to. It is a great experience in hind sight, but at the time I wanted my boss dead. I realized only on my last day to work for a company closer to where I lived how much he appreciated me. A: I didn't have to clean the truck for my last 2 weeks. Called me by my birth given name and offered me 3 or 4 bucks an hour more to stay, and my own truck.
PAy your dues and you will have those investment properties and whatever else you desire. Remember this, no one owes you anything and when you start to be sucessfull take that sucess with with thanks and be humble about it. Good on ya boy!@!@

Re: First Week In The Job!
Ever sent a new kid out to the supply house for a can of smoke? Cause he had let the smoke out of a ballast that had shorted when he powered the fixture up.

He introduces himself: Hi, I'm Richie ME: Hey Rich, I'm Celtic Next Man:Richard? Richie: Yup Next Man: Mind if I call you "DICK" ...and so Dick was on the job. LOL The kid hated it..but he took it.

Re: First Week In The Job!
Also, I was told to get the wire stretcher or anything like that but the first day I was sent into the school (that is the project I am doing) and I was told to find my super and I asked a couple of guys where I could find him and one guy was giving me all weird directions of where to go and I went off following his directions. When I was halfway down the hallway I heard them all laughing and I looked around and that was my supervisor that gave me those directions.
HAH... that is really the only joke that has been played on me. Other than that everybody is really respectful. |
