Explosion Proof Fan
Would a fan such as this need a dedicated circuit in a commercial building? If so, what would you install?

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
For an amp draw that low, the NEC wouldn't require a dedicated circuit, but historically, most guys would. That fan will also require very special wiring methods, and most importantly, special materials to maintain a safe installation in a hazardous location.
What duty will it be put to? Paint booth? |

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
light duty paint both for furniture repair, It'll be used for no longer than 20 mins at a time
Md, could you elaborate a lil on the wiring method and materials

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
It will be installed in a block wall, I plan to set the fan myself, but if the wiring is tooooo complicated, we'll have to get someone to come wire it. It does have several wires coming from the motor

Re: Explosion Proof FanQuote:
No way, Jose. Hazardous location wiring is above the skill of many run-of-the-mill electricians, and definitely not a DIY project. You'll definitely need to hire that out. It will involve threaded conduit, seal off fittings, and maybe even an explosion proof disconnect. One thing I can assure you is that you'll spend at least as much on getting that thing wired up as you spent on the fan. Screw up the wiring methods and materials to a piece of explosion proof equipment, and you pretty much nullify the explosion proof rating.

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
Your right, I was. But thanks to your expertise, I'm not. I'll get a good electrician to come in. Thank-you very much

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
Md, one more question. What about outlets, lights, and other electrical devices in the area. Should all of them be done the same way, somehow. There is an outlet just above where they want the fan

Sorry... best I got. I'm sure there's probably a few other electricians that check in on this site that might do a good bit of hazardous location work. Hard to say. |

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
I work on boats (have most of my life). The hardware is known as 'vapor tight' and good for gas engine installation. If you're not comfortable/qualified to do the wiring, have it done by someone that is.

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
If it is a Class1 Div1 area (most spray booths are) then a standerd receptacle should not be there, they have special recpetacles (and all other devices) for this type of an area that has sealoffs and screw covers along with a safety switch interlock such that the cover can not be removed without the switch being off preventing possible arcing. very Very expensive.

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
I found out today, all they will be doing is very minor touch up on chairs, etc, using areosol cans of lacquer
. They wanted the fan mainly to get the smell out of the warehouse. I am going to build a 3 walled area with a open shelf (something with holes so air will flow) for the items they are working on. Also will be building a filter system to filter the material solids before they reach the fan. I'm sure that even this needs to meet the Class 1 Div 1 codes though, so I will be getting an electrician to deal with all of the wiring

Re: Explosion Proof Fan
Check with the building codes.
if you are introducing flamable material into an area and it is not confined and vented correctly, the entire area may become class1 div1 (you dont want to go there!). they would probaly have to get an enginer study done with how much combustable material is intruduced and disapated to avoid this. the liablity is endless if something ever happens, all involved with be draged into it. just my 2 cents!!
