Explain To Me?

Here is the question. Really old homes that had beautiful crystal chandlers some were rigged so that they could be lowered down for cleaning. I don't understand how a electric guy would have hooked it up so it could be lowered down for cleaning. Finally do you guys still hooked up chandlers so they can be lowered down for cleaning?

don't know how they did it in really old homes, but these days we use chandelier lifts.

Re: Explain To Me?

Sure do. It's a motorized affair. The chandelier is hung from a steel cable that raises it up and down, and it "plugs in" to a special fitting on the ceiling when it is raised to height. You can make any chandelier the type that rasies down to clean and such if you buy the chandelier lift kit. You need room above to mount the motor and such.

I worked on a half-dozen old one's in an auditorium. Basically the same thing, but no motor. Hand cranks at the edge of the balcony, and a pully system in the attic to route the steel support cables.
