Dryer Move And Nec

Hey Sparkys

When moving a cloths dryer just a bit over 6 ft away from the its original location a 6 ft extension cord woud not work. Some electrians have said that moving the dryer 6 ft away from the outlet is a nec violation. Others have said they could use an RV cord or could make a longer cord for the dryer.
Some have suggested the house could start on fire or be an insurance issue. I find this laughable. Does the nec rules apply to this.

Thanks
Chippy

Why not just move the outlet?

Re: Dryer Move And Nec

Any modifcations to the outlet require a permit. The longer cord doesnt, and seems like alot less work.

Standard cord for it is 5',no?
Have you looked for a longer one?
I hope a sparky gives you an opinion
on the extension cord idea.

Get an electrician to move the box, screw the permit. It's ridiculous to pull a permit for a qualified electrician to relocate a box, absolutely ridiculous. This is why people sometimes hire hacks, they make it to hard for the qualified guy to do it at a reasonable cost.

Re: Dryer Move And Nec

We could move the outlet by adding conduit and a new juntion box but this requires a permit and an electrician.

Re: Dryer Move And Nec

They do make 9 foot range and dryer cords. I accidentally got one, once upon a time. I just checked a couple catalogs quick (American and Carol) and they seem to only have 6 footers. There might have been a UL change such that they can only make up to 6 footers now.

A word of caution... if you make your own cordset, you have to use conductors rated for at least the branch circuit's ampacity. The UL listed cordset assembly has much smaller conductors, because it's been tested by the UL specially for that use. You can't make a cord with #10 conductors on your own like the premade range cordset has, and still be in compliance. Just something to think about.

That's what I was hoping a
"certified expert" would tell him.

I had a helper buy me one of those
humongus cords once too, didn't know
if they still made them either.

Re: Dryer Move And Nec

I guess whats been brought up is moving the dryer over 6 ft away from the outlet is against NEC rules. We can get a 6ft cord at HD and move the dryer more than 6 ft. So how does this rule apply to moving the dryer ? NEC 210.5.
Are these rules for new construction and do they apply to moving a dryer ?

Re: Dryer Move And Nec

I thought as much.

That applies to any installation, new or renovation.

I think in your case of "just over six feet" you are fine.
