Down Sizing HID Lighting Bulbs

Can you replace a 1000W high pressure sodium bulb in with a 400W or lower bulb using the same ballast? I know you couldn't install a higher wattage bulb in a lower wattage ballast, but can you undersize the bulb and if so, is there any downsides?

Many thanks sparkys.

No. The ballast needs to match the lamp. In some cases, a mismatched ballast/lamp combination will appear to work, but the lamp and/or the ballast will have a sorely reduced life. I very much suspect that if you put a 400W lamp in a socket connected to a 1000W ballast that it'll just go "pop" and you wasted 20 bucks. If you want less light, change the ballast to match the lamp or install a new fixture. Sometimes a new fixture is cheaper.
