Custom Built Fixtures And UL Approval??

I was watching "This old house" and they showed a small manufacturer doing custom light fixtures. I never heard any comment on any type of UL approval on these fixtures. Am I missing something??

Re: Custom Built Fixtures And UL Approval??

I think that as long as you construct the fixture of all Ur (backwards capitol letter "R", maybe you've seen the logo) electrical components (UL recognized), the resultant fixture is UL approved. Additionally, places like electric sign shops may fix their own UL labels to their product, since they have a UL approved sign build shop and receive regular UL audits. Honestly, I don't know for sure, but those are my two best guesses. There's a "lamp shop" in most bigger towns making custom and modified fixtures, so there surely must be a way for this to be legal.
