Correct Way To Install

I have a situation where I am going to install a air conditioner upstairs becuase the central air conditioner always cools the downstairs more than the upstairs. I also live in a very cold climate when winter comes along. What I would like to do is move the thermostat for the central air conditioner from upstairs to downstairs and use the upstairs air conditioner that I will install to cool the upstairs (wall unit) with its own thermostat. The thing is I don't know how this will effect the heating in the winter if I move the themostat downstairs so I would like to put two thermostats on the central air. One to control it downstairs and have one to control it upstairs to see what works the best. How could I do this. Could I use a three way switch to do this. Perhaps there is a better way to do what I want to do. thank you.

Re: Correct Way To Install

Yeah, what you have there now, in terms of a thermostat, is a heating/cooling thermostat. In the thermostat cable there's a red, white, yellow, and possibly green wire. The red, yellow, and green are used for the cooling mode. The red and white are used for the heating mode. You might also have an orange if your heat is by heat pump.

What you really should think about doing in your case is locating a cooling only thermostat downstairs, and a heating only thermostat upstairs. Run the appropriate conductors to each stat.
