Interesting article in this months EC&M magazine on copper theft. This link here shows actual thiefs caught in the act. What a bunch of morons.

Re: Copper Theft Videos....

Three $50,000 + per year maintenance workers at a US Postal Service Center lost their jobs for stealing scrap copper and other scrap material worth a few hundred bucks.

Good pay, good health insurance, good pension, steady job, 2 weeks sick leave, 5 weeks vacation, life insurance, all gone.

Re: Copper Theft Videos....

Yes I think they did so far. But they might still be charged in Federal court with a criminal offense and the judge could order restitution. All that's left is for the IRS to charge them with avoiding income tax on the money. I would not be surprised.

The electrical company I used to work for has replaced a lot of copper :P

Also, people are often found crispy inside construction site temp. electrical rooms.

Re: Copper Theft Videos....

I remember a few years back some news show did a special on new construction site thefts, they covered the whole range from thieves stealing new appliances out of spec homes, to yanking copper out of walls. Total douche bags those people are who pull that, their one step less worse then then any sh*t bag that would steal a tradesman's tools.

The best one was the well off couple that was caught stealing newly laid sod. Freak'n ridiculous. You could see the wheels turning in their heads when they were caught, it wasn't till they were caught until it actually dawned on them that stealing from a construction site is actually a crime and they are really stealing from somebody and not just taking part in some sort of socially acceptable sport.

Re: Copper Theft Videos....

Fella i know around here stole around 600' hundred feet of 500MCM from the local ski resort. It was new and still on the spool. The stuff weighed around 9lbs per ft. It was estimated that he got around $10k for the scrap copper but they couldnt prove it. They only had video of him leaving with his truck loaded.
One of my niebors here had problems with someone stealing his firewood so he drilled a hole in the end of a peice and filled it with black powder. A couple days later there was a call for a blown up wood stove a couple miles away. Lucky for him nobody got hurt. Another time this same fella had someone stealing sand from his property, so he grabbed his shotgun and waited for them to return. He stood in the woods and watched them load their truck, when they finished he stepped out of the woods and racked a shell in. He then told them they were trespassing and stealing and made them unload the truck. This guy is old school and can be rather amusing at times. He lives out in the woods on the back road with no running water or grid power. He does have solar power though.

I've got over 500lbs of bare copper in storage. With the low price of copper right now it's not going anywhere.
Where I live, the scrap price was over $3 per pound of bare copper and around $1 per pound for BX or insulated copper. I took a sh*t load of BX in the other day and I only got ten cents a pound for it. Buddy said they are buying bare copper right now at only $1 a pound !

Re: Copper Theft Videos....

Not sure what copper is trading at right now but I do know it has come down in price like everything else. 12/2 NM is still above fifty bucks though.

By the way, I just filled up the tank for $1.52 p/ gallon.
