Can A General Contractor?

Hello all, been a while.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me for sure. Do you need an electrical license to replace light fixtures, simple two wire connection? I can not get a straight answer from anyone locally.
TIA

Re: Can A General Contractor?

Thank you for the prompt reply! That's what I thought. Is there anywhere that I can get documentation, NEC or otherwise.
Thanks

Re: Can A General Contractor?

This is state specific. The NEC is silent on who may do what. States oftentimes require licensing of contractors by type and licensing of tradesmen by type. You will need to check the law in your state.

Assuming your state requires licensing, then one would need the proper license to do the work. That would be an electrical contractor and/or an journeyman electrician.

Making it a little more complicated, some states allow handymen to do that type of work, others don't allow it.

I have a gc licence. through inspections Ive never been asked to produce licences from subs. Im ultimatly responsible. but when I do hire subs I go with licensced guys anyway.

Definitely depends on the State. Best to check with them.
