Big Bang

I had a service call today - seems the t-stat to an electric AHU wasn't working, so I went to take a look. The breakers were fine, AC compressors looked good, so I went to the crawlspace to check out the AHU. It was on a pull-out disconnect which looked fine and had good power going to it. I then opened the unit to check the wiring inside and noticed some large burn/ explosion marks. It's an electric air-handler, 10kw, one year old, the kind where you simply splice the line wires to the load wires using a properly sized wirenut. The inner parts of the wirenut (the coils inside that provide pressure) were blown out about 2 feet from where they were connected. The homeowner asked what caused it, and I guessed either lightning or a large power surge. Anybody come accross anything similiar before, and if so, what caused it to explode like it did? By the way, nothing else in the home looked damaged, so why just the AHU?

Re: Big Bang

A 10,000 watt Air Handler?

Before I get jumped on, most AHU's I've worked on are gas fed. Thank you.

What are the BTU's on a 10kw AH?

Re: Big Bang

How do you know they were 'blown' 2 feet away. Maybe they just fell off and rolled there.
