Bathroom Fans
Is it normal for the electrician to run the vents for a bathroom exhaust fan?
For a couple years now we've never done that.....HVAC guys have done it....but we have another contractor who says all his electricians have always done this for him.... We did it for him.....charged extra....I just wanted to know if this is infact normal? |

Re: Bathroom Fans
Hvac guys usually run most vents. When I was doing commercial Hvac, we supplied and installed the complete exhaust, fan and vent (except wiring). If it was a fan/light combination the electrician supplied it and we ran the vent. For residential work we usually ran vents for w/d and stove along with bathroom exhaust.

Re: Bathroom Fans
I usually vent bath fans, that's it. Range hoods and dryers are on the GC or HVAC guy.
I put bath fan venting in my bids. If the GC or HVAC guy wants to do it I let them. This is kind of like t-stat wiring. Some plumbers/HVAC insist on doing their own. Others say, that's wire and they don't touch wiring. I am amazed sometimes to find both electricians and plumbers who don't know how to wire a complete boiler.

Re: Bathroom Fans
Typically, I've vented the bath fans and the dryer. Ask the GC who he wants to do it sometimes, and leave that decision up to him. If anyone's unsure who's responsibility it is, I pretty much volunteer. I do a better job at it normally, because a great deal of my background is HVAC. Just be aware of the special IRC rules for venting dryers and range hoods, and also don't use uninsulated vinyl ducting through a cold attic area. If you're not comfortable doing the venting, don't do it and don't volunteer. Be advised that some states license mechanical contractors and the electrician is prohibited from doing the venting work. Even where not prohibited, some HVAC contractors will get excited when they see you doing "their work" by venting the bath fans. I'm not going to fight anyone over it. We're normally only talking about 20 bucks worth of material.
Like Speedy says, there are a few things that are often up in the air as to who does them.... underground conduit work and associated digging, low voltage HVAC control wiring, and bath/dryer/range hood venting, and well pump wiring. If you're preparing a bid (or even an estimate), you'd be well advised to ask first who's responsibility this is going to be. |
