Add A Light To Hallway Circuit-involves AL


If you're adding a second fixture to an aluminum wired home (in an upstairs hall-wire is easily accessible)-are there any special precautions? Can you pigtail the old aluminum w/ a 14 gauge to the new fixture? I recall reading notes of warning about AL wiring but seem to remember it being about poor connections and don't know if a union between dissimilar metals is a problem.

There are special connectors that MUST be used to transition from aluminium to copper. If this is for a customer, don't mess around with it... the liability is too great. Use your electrician. If this is your own home, proceed with caution or hire a sparky. Here's the best article I know about:

I quote you an electrician's article out of my archives:

"I would never add to an aluminum system. Instead add new wiring back to the panel for any new loads. You are assuming a lot of responsibility messing with old wiring in general, more with aluminum, and aluminum systems can be flaky."
