Warnings

* Wiring inspectors are people, and as such some are good, some not so much. Some will help you and others will try to bully you into to hiring an electrician to do the work instead. If he is of the latter mindset, no amount of long-distance "hand-holding" via wiki or online consulting is going to help you. Be prepared for an uphill battle, or it might be best "give him this one" so you can fight another battle another day. He is "the authority having jurisdiction" and you won't be able to change that.

* This is extremely dangerous for those who are not licensed electricians or otherwise familiar with residential power utility hook-ups. It is advised that you contact the power company to disconnect power to your service before any of this work is attempted because breaches in insulation may be difficult to visually spot. You run the risk of severe electrical shock if you accidentally short an exposed connection with any part of your body.

* Be certain to have your upgraded system verified by a professional before restoring electrical service.

Re: ??????

I feel as if I could do 200 amp upgrades with my eyes closed. That's an indicator of how many of them I've done and how much I enjoy doing them. If it were up to me I'd do a service every day of the week.

The money's not bad either.

But in the end I don't think there'd be too many homeowners attempting to do their own services. Why? Because if they screw up they'll be sheet out of luck until an electrician can get over there and get them back on line.
