10,000 Sq. Ft Retail

Yo,

We are converting an old 2 story brick to individual retail stores. Probably at least 100 x 6 inch cans Flourescent with additional merchandise tracks provided later when they figure out what they want and where the merchandise is going. New 400 amp service, 100 Receptacles all in pipe...etc..etc..

My question is we usually just supply basic cans and basic incandescent for most places. They would like us to pick all lighting (We usually don't like to pick lighting...to subjective). Any good places online with good service to talk about lighting options? The customer says keep it on the inexpensive side as well.

Thanks in advance

How "cheap" will it be when it must be re-layed out and re-installed?

If it were me...I would:
a) offer to hire a lighting designer
b) tell them to hire one

There is more to lighting than just putting in lights.
Not that you or I couldn't come up with a layout, fixture styles, etc ...but will it be acceptable to the customer....and if not, how many tries will result in success? And who will be paying for this trial and error?

Save time and grief, get the designer. We've been burned by several retailers, it never works.

I told the attendant at the HESS station today to keep it on the inexpensive side. He just kinda gave me a blank stare.

Yeah. I'll mention that and I know what the answer will be. I'll make sure that if I have to design it, it will be iron clad in contract that he is subject to whatever I decide. I do know we are shooting for 3watts sq/ft at floor level all around and we are going to have at least one j-box (20amp dedicated) in ceiling per room capped of for future track lighting (all in conduit). He does want all flourescent's for now but I've heard that before. So I will calculate loads based on incandescent just in case. I might make a design with cans like 666 in the main room or something pretty like that. But seriously, does anyone have any good links to good lighting companies online with lots of info on lighting design?? My distributor doesnt help much in this regard. It doesnt hurt to keep studying lighting design since you end up doing it half the time anyhow....

Oh..there 12ft ceilings and it's a gym, spinning club upstairs and bike shop retail downstairs..white walls

Thanks

People pay a lot of money, and spend a lot of time, learning how to properly design lighting...none of them give the good stuff away for free...they are smarter than electricians...

Re: 10,000 Sq. Ft Retail

I am fortunate in that one of my suppliers has access to a distributor that will design layouts. I try not to take undue advantage of that situation. My other suppliers just want fixture #'s and counts. I agree that lighting design is an art to itself, although I wouldn't mind learning alot more about it.
