Was there mud under the tape, or did they just stick it to the board?

I was tempted to try that on a small repair once, I didn't, but I wondered if it would work.

Warner beat me to it- I've seen duct tape painted over before.

Sad, really.

I did try this on a small repair (didn't have any paper tape with me); cut two lengths of 2" general purpose (white) masking tape, stuck them glue to glue and set with mud, like regular paper tape. This was in a revenue property, owned by a company I once did remodeling work for. Was back in the house numerous times over the 4+ years I did this company's work, and that repair (door knob hole) was still holding up fine...

For all the obvious reasons, sticking the tape on the wall (with it's adhesive) and mudding over it never crossed my mind; using it the way I described saved me the "stupid tax" of having to drive to the store for a piddling little item...as I said, it does work...doubled up, it's actually probably tougher than paper tape. The adhesion was fine; I use taping mud to set repairs.

And for the one (I know you're out there) that's ready to pick the "once did remodeling work for" part of my post out...highlight it, and infer that these "hack tactics" are the reason I am no longer their "man"...

...I no longer do their work by choice.

The issue was money (of course).

Cheers, Ron
