Question

Tips For Large Cracks Spanning Plywood Edge

This is going to be a boxed stair rail design, so there will be drywall added to the area above the stair tread.

You guys have any tips for patching the large cracks and over the edge of the plywood?

I was thinking mesh tape and MH ready patch. Maybe bondo but ive never used it before.

What do you guys think?

I don't think mud will stick to that wood for very long, some sort of wood trim would work best.

Hi Wopachop I don't know if I'm reading you right here with the dry wall above the treads, but why not fit a false stringer out of timber, and that would cover the mess any way on the outside of the treads and risers.

Trim tex makes a product called tear away. This will butt to the plywood and tighten everything up beautifully.

I've done fills like that before, using mesh tape, sheetrock screws here and there to lock the mud and tape down, then hot mud.

I thought he was going to add drywall to the tread, trim the edge where people walk with wood and then just corner bead the outside. That is why I recommended 325.
